{Mentor Monday} Bright Eyes

Eyes are the windows to our souls, and thus critical to a photo capturing true personality. Knowing this, it's our job behind the camera to make sure those eyes really shine!

In the photography industry, these sparkling eyes are called "catch lights". They liven up your subject, and add an extra POP into your portraits.

These eyes say "MISCHIEF!"

My favorite tip for capturing "bright eyes": Face a lightsource!

"What!? You told us NOT to do that!" Ahh, the joys of photographing outside! You can backlight your subject, and STILL have an abundance of ambient light to brighten those peepers. An easy trick is to shoot from slightly above your subject. This will lift your subject's gaze so those big beautiful eyes of theirs reflects the light from the sky above. Bonus: lifting your subject's gaze also has a slimming effect! No double chins here, folks :)

"What if I'm photographing inside?" Easy peasy! Position your subject so their eyes are catching window light. Check out this sparkle!

Time to practice! Share your "catch light" photos on my facebook page! I'll see you back here next week with more helpful tips!
