I've become a huge advocate of women sewing for themselves over the last few months. I think its exceptionally important to prioritize ourselves (and I know all too well how motherhood interferes with that!). In terms of sewing, it's just a bonus that this yields something beautiful that we can FEEL beautiful in!
I'd thought I'd gotten really good at this lately, too (prioritizing myself, that is!). Until I was chatting with my girlfriend Jeanine about our features for this series, and confessed how many half-started projects I had for myself. I'd simply been derailed by sewing for...everyone else.
I kicked my post-PPD self. How did I let this happen? Hadn't I learned anything from my emotional trials in the last year?
Self-care is NOT selfish!
And the stack of unfinished projects suggested this momma was way overdue for some self-care.
I picked up a pom-pom trimmed yoke (a la Jocole Quickdress) I'd made months back after seeing this Anthropologie top. Once upon a time, I'd planned to use it to replicate this nursing top. But then I figured... with Everett coming up one the 1 year mark, he'd surely ween before I could finish such a project.
Not so, apparently. We're at 14 months and dude would probably nurse for another 14 years if he'd still fit in my lap!
Nursing... mommy-love... does it get much more "woman" than that?? I think not! Inspiration struck, so I pom-pom'd over to my machine and got stitching...
This is what I came up with:
I'll write up a full tut eventually (I will make more of these!) - but basically I took my top-10-women's-pattern-every-sewist-must-own favorite, the Quick Dress, and cut two front pieces. One I cut down the middle, then I gathered the other and layered it over the opening. Baste together, stitch as one, and voilà! A nursing quick dress! The mommy-approved, summer-friendly, high-fashion replica.
All that's left is to grab your babe...
Fuel him up...
And watch him go!
Neat, huh?? Amazing things happen when you sew for yourself! And the more I do, the better I get at adapting patterns like these to fit my everyday needs ...and *cough* expensive aesthetic.... ;)
Happy Sewing!! Please link me to your projects in the comments below, I always love more inspiration :D
